Parent: “How do I get my five year old (prep) to practice her writing with me each night when she fights with me and disputes what I say?”
Jackie Hall: A great way to get kids to do anything is to make it fun.
The question, “What’s in it for me?” is always the determining factor that makes anybody WANT to do anything.
Find out what she thinks about homework and why she doesn’t want to do it so you can gain some insight into what’s happening for her and what you might be able to do to turn it around.
Also, do some self-checking as to whether you are being patient with where she is at in her learning. Sometimes we can expect them to understand it at the level that we do but we have to remember that we’ve had lots of practice.
I know it can be a laborious task to teach (goodness knows I’d never have the patience to be a teacher), however if you can find a way to make it more interesting or fun for her, then she is more likely to comply.
